Below a selection of projects is shown for which we provided facade engineering services whilst working for our previous employers Arup and BuroHappold. Arup and BuroHappold are independent engineering and consultancy firms working across every aspect of today’s built environment.  Projects included offices and residential buildings but also educational, commercial, transport, leisure, etc. Our services included all facade related matters such as the following:

Tender Stages and competitions

Supporting the design team during competitions by providing sketches, material and facade system knowledge to create innovative facades. 

Design Stages

Design guidance included regular workshops with the architect and other consultants. Topics such as the following were addressed:

Thermal assessments, structural design, installation methods, access and maintenance methods, fire safety, acoustic performance, security design, risk analysis (glass and installation), age friendly design etc.

Material and facade system studies were carried out. Typical materials are brickwork, natural stone, metal claddings, curtain walls, copper, bronze, precast and fiber reinforced concrete,  bio and plastic composites, timber cladding

Tender documentation

Tender documentation development for the full facade package. During the tender stage tenderers (facade contractors) were interviewed and their submissions reviewed.

Construction Stages

Calculations, drawings, installation sequences and material/ product proposals submitted by the contractor were reviewed and discussed during regular construction meetings with the contractor, developer and architect.

Factory inspections and prototype testing were part of our services to maintain quality and consistency of the quality of the facades. Site inspections were carried out monthly or bi weekly to ensure the facade is installed as per drawings and calculations and to minimise risks due to for example poor workmanship.

Project management and façade design during all stages for the refurbishment and extension of the office building. The façade comprises a variety of systems, including unitised curtain wall, stick system, glass fins, stone façade and a large atrium.

Battersea Power Station Phase 3 - O1, London, UK

Mixed use 15 storey building accommodating 750 apartments. Facade engineering services from concept up to end of tender stage. The building features large precast slab edge bullnoses, precast soffits, sliding doors, highly reflective glazing, curved glass and winter gardens.

The Looking Glass, PC Hooftstraat 138, Amsterdam, NL

Facade engineer for the storefront renovation during design, tender and construction phases. The façade consists of three prefabricated panels containing the curved, structural glass panels detailed with minimal stainless-steel framing elements.

Project management and facade design during all design stages for the 240m tall residential tower. The facade consists of various curtain wall and cladding systems.

Principal Place, London, UK

Principal Place Residential is a 50 storey Tower in Shoreditch, London, featuring high end luxury apartments and penthouses. The tower is one of the tallest residential buildings in Central London. The facade features unitised systems, a double height stick system, high end sliding doors and curved glass.  

Facade consulting services included project management, facade engineering, factory and site inspections, value engineering, resourcing and finance in the Construction Stage of this project.

Solar Carve

Solar Carve, New York City, USA

Façade consultant for 11-story office tower located adjacent to the Highline park in Manhattan designed by Studio Gang Architects. The building is carved at two opposite corners of the building volume to allow daylight at street level. The facade features glazed unitized curtain wall designed as sculpted system capable of accommodating varying glazing geometries.

Deansgate Square - Owen Street Towers_ph

Deansgate Square, Manchester, UK

4 residential Towers of 122 to 200 meter high. Facade engineering during all design and construction stages. The facade features a unitised curtain wall system with fritted glass and glazed spandrel panels. The project had challenging thermal performance  requirements.

Fitzroy Place, London, UK

Monitoring compliance during the construction stage of a five building  development  as part of the client’s compliance monitoring team. The buildings feature brick-faced and stone-faced precast concrete storey high panels, in combination with window systems, stick systems and metal stud walls. Services provided include review of facade contractor’s drawings, calculations and material submittals, weekly site inspections, off site inspections of factories and mock ups.

Nine Elms Square, London, UK

Nine Elms Square is located at the heart of the regeneration area of Vauxhall, London. The development will provide around 1,900 apartments. The scheme consists of twelve buildings in total, including three high-rise towers of over 175m. The facade consists of an aluminium unitised system with large operable windows and sliding doors, and various opaque cladding panels.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), San Francisco, USA

Façade design, engineering and thermal modeling for the museum expansion, featuring a complex sculpted GFRP cladding geometry and large, free spanning glazed façade systems. Facade engineering services delivered for the project from concept design through completion on site.

Emma and Georgina Bloomberg Center, New York City, USA

Facade design for the enclosure of the Bloomberg Center on the Cornell Tech campus with Morphosis Architects. This building has a Net Zero energy and LEED Platinum ambition. The large format unitized systems are designed to achieve a high thermal performance and utilize exterior shading at strategic locations.
